grass seeding & weed fabric

(Brooklyn, New York)

I am getting ready to put seed (grass) in my yard. It's a small area, but it has tons of weeds. I have dug up as many weeds as possible. I am suppose to put down the weed fabric? How does the see grow through the fabric? HELP.

sloped back yard seed won't grow, dirt washes away

by Stephanie
(Bumpass, VA)

The back yard is eroding badly and I now need to put top soil down and start again. Before I do I want to know if I have to dig or rake the hard red clay soil or can I just place the top soil on top the apply jute. The slope is gradual and not steep but angled enough that the seed I plant either washes away or if it grows the constant rain washes the grass away over time. I now have holes, peaks etc.

Thanks

Hi Stephanie,
Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thanks for asking the question on your slope and planting grass.

From reading your submission, if I am understanding you correctly, the Jute is already applied. If it is and can be taken up, I would take it up, rake and prepare
the ground as best you can on the slope. Once the ground is prepared, put down the top soil. A great top soil if you can get, is a combination of black
soil, sand, and saw dust. Works wonders in any soil environment. Put down the Jute and plant your seeds.

An extra tip is to mist your slope, not a hard watering. Your goal is to make sure the seeds stay in tack so they will get established. Also, there are certain type
of grass seeds that will work on slopes. Hope this helps and thanks for asking the question.
Kimberly

The turf above the buried propane tank in the yard is all yellow and dead in an outline of the tank. Do you know what causes this?

all grass died

by Donna
(Lake Charles,Louisiana, USA)

All the grass in my back yard died gradually over the years despite frequent fertilizing, pest treatment and watering. Now my yard is nothing but weeds. What do I need to do, cost effectively, to have a yard with grass? No plants will grow in the yard either.

White Pine Needles killing my grass

by Bill
(Bel air, MD)

The border of my property has a row of mature white pine trees approximately 30-35 feet tall. I like the trees as it gives us privacy from the house next door but the needles falling from the trees kill the Fescue grass underneath. I have re-sod, reseeded, and added all kinds of fertilizers to try and get the grass to grow and am continually blowing off the needles but nothing seems to work. Anyone have any suggestions to fix this problem?
