euonymous bush possible fungus but cannot find pictures

by Christa
(Topeka, KS, USA)

I can find descriptions of various fungi diseases of Euonymous bushes but I really need pictures to be sure.

In just 1 week while on vacation several bushes already look dead and it is spreading to all of them; small white tiny oblong pieces that I can brush off and this is on the top, under the leaves as well as on the stems.. its is so pervasive, how can I stop quickly from this killing all the plants. Bushes have been very healthy for over 20 years.

Euonymous Bush Possible Fungus
by: Kimberly

Hi Christa
Kimberly here. Thanks for the response. You can prune back first to get rid of any leaves or branches that have the fungus. I have done contact powder and liguid before.

The Euonymous that are just beginning the infection, spray both sides like you have been doing. Wait a week and do again if needed. Let us know how you make out. I really hope you can save the shrubs. Thanks so much for sharing.

euonymous fungus
by: Christa

Thanks, that is quite helpful. Since this came on so quickly and pervasively spread, are the shrubs that have dead leaves and empty branches dead? How much pruning should I do? Some of the branches are bare out to the ends that still have some leaves. Some of the shrubs just have the begininning of the fungus. I only sprayed the top of the leaves until I read that both sides need to be sprayed but ran out. Do every part of the pant need to be sprayed for contack kill or do I need to be sure I have a systemic fungal spray or powder? Alot of questions but before the fungus came the bushes were looking the most healthy ever in 20 years. Thanks for all the information!

Euonymous Bush Possible Fungus
by: Kimberly

Hi Christa, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your Euonymous shrubs.

I have had the exact problem you are having with the Euonymous bushes and so have some of my previous clients.

This isn't uncommon with older shrubs and sometimes more with the Euonymous specie.

The white is a definite powdery fungus. It can happen when the Euonymous get older. As you mentioned this particular fungus will spread into your other shrubs. You can purchase a liquid fungicide or powder form. You will do one application and wait a week. If the fungus doesn't clear up all the way, do another application. Keep the shrubs watered but don't water the leaves as you want the fungicide to get to the root of the problem.

Hopefully the fungicide will work and take care of the problem. You can purchase a liquid or power fungicide at chain stores, or nursery and garden centers. I have lost one Euonymous around a mailbox due to this white fungus.

Thanks again Christa for asking the question and please let us know how you make out. Have a great day and a happy fourth of July!
